Doubt

Doubt

Doubt is a collection inspired by the feeling of not being good enough. The thoughts behind this collection come from my own feeling of self-doubt in myself as a person, as well as a designer. Throughout my final looks, you will see many curved details such as circular shirring, denim waves, and curved prints. These shapes all derive from the subsequent feeling of drowning that I feel when my doubt overwhelms me. I gave each of the five fabrics its own representation as it relates to the inspiration which you can see on my illustration pages.

As a sustainability minor, I always looked to the Supima competition and found it intriguing. My goal as a designer is to explore sustainability as well as maximalism and the contradiction between both concepts. How can I as a designer cater to a maximal market while still considering sustainability and can they both coexist? For this collection not only did I attempt to tackle sustainability through the use of Supima fabrics, but the use of Eco-Dyes as well. Along with that, I explore minimal waste techniques such as subtraction cutting for my knit looks; That being said because of the uncertainty of subtraction cutting, my knit pieces may not turn out exactly as illustrated. The end goal of this project is to be minimal to zero waste. Other ways I plan to include sustainability into my designs are through the use of scrap fabrics. The idea is to write doubts and affirmations onto scrap pieces of fabric and incorporate them throughout the look, mainly the denim waves, but through shirring as well.

To me, sustainability is not only about the environment but diversity and inclusion as well. This is why I incorporated shirring to allow for increased size inclusivity. People of all shapes and sizes could wear these pieces.
